Superheroes: There’s One on Every Corner

We are most familiar with Superheroes in the movies. We all have our favorites. I love that in recent years there are so many girl superheroes.

But what do we mean when we talk of a Superhero?

The most common definition I found is” A superhero is someone who makes a positive impact on the world, focuses on helping others, fighting injustice or making changes in society. Superheroes are known to dress up in costume or in a mask so as not to draw attention to their real identity, they are not focused on applaud or accolades. They help the helpless, touch the untouchable, get their hands dirty, are willing to take risks. They are protectors, rescuers, they serve.

Are any of these words sounding like people you know?

What if I was to tell you that I believe there are Superheroes on every corner? They are not specially chosen to perform great tasks. I believe that every ordinary human being is capable of doing the extraordinary. It’s not about talent or physique or ability, that makes getting started as a Superhero easier. In my experience it is the weak and the anxious and the wounded who make the most wonderful Superheroes.

Qualities of a Superhero

1. Superheroes stand out from the crowd.

They behave in a way that is not average or ordinary. they are ordinary people who behave in an extraordinary way given their circumstances. The anxious child who goes up on stage, or waves goodbye to his mommy when he would rather be glued to her or reads in front of the group when she has a stammer. Superheroes are not bound by what is considered the norm or what is expected of them, they make a conscious effort to follow their own drum, take a different course.

2. Respond to a need or to their intuition or a prompt sometimes for themselves sometimes for others.

The Superhero is driven by a desire to be meaningful in the world. They are able to be empathic (see the world from the other’s perspective) compassionate (feel concern for the needs of others).

The Superhero WANTS to make a difference in the world which can be focused on people, animals or the environment

3. Courage and Resilience and Commitment:

The superhero is able to see beyond their fear or the obstacles. They are focused on the goal not on the hurdle. They are able to stand up after falling and carry.

4. Superheroes DRESS THE PART.

Sometimes the costume helps us get into the role we need to perform. If I put on the hat or cloak or take a wand/sword I can do the task.

Being in the right costume gives me

  • Confidence
  • The ability to do the task with ease
  • Anonymity

5. Integrity and Authenticity

They own up to their mistakes, they are honest when it is hard, they don’t make excuses or blame others unnecessarily.

This doesn’t mean superheroes need to be martyrs or suffer unnecessarily. It simply means they have the ability to be real and own the consequences of their choices

6. I CAN ATTITITUDE ! Curious and Creative

Who remembers MacGyver? Or Indiana Jones? They were almost as farfetched as Superman or Hulk. What they were experts at was looking around, seeing what they had and making a plan with what they had available to them in the moment. They didn’t wait to get the right tool or the appropriate materials they applied creative and critical thinking. Most important they focused on WHAT THEY CAN DO! Not What they CAN’T DO.

7. Solution Orientated

Superheroes are focused on what they have and not on what they don’t have. They are focused on what THEY CAN do not on what someone else SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T DO or on what someone has else HAS OR HASN’T DONE.
